CONTEMPORARY

"Contemporary design doesn't refer to a specific period of time, it's constantly changing to reflect the popular styles of present-day design. It borrows qualities from modernism, minimalism, and other global styles, without hyper-focusing on any one in particular. For us at KWD contemporary is akin to minimalism, which extends beyond home design and into a lifestyle where less is more. The focus is less on things, and more on freedom and contentment. There is beauty in simplicity.”

SPECIAL TIP

Invest in a hero piece of art that takes centre stage amidst a neutral palette of textures and tones.

TOP TIPS

  1. With a minimalist style it’s important to invest in quality pieces and to use a variety or textures and materials. Contemporary style is about marrying form and function. Form is one of the foundation elements of contemporary design, but all of these elements must be functional as well. There is nothing whimsical here.
  2. Pare back the items in a room and find a stand out piece of furniture and let it shine. Build a story in the room with lamps, plants and art (avoid the temptation to fill space with furniture, instead allow space to breathe and leave room to relax without clutter).
  3. Neutral shades are the cornerstone of contemporary design – blacks, whites, tans and greys are soft and blend seamlessly. You can add a splash of colour and visual interest with layers of texture.
  4. Layering light is also important for contemporary design, in particular natural light. When natural light isn’t in abundance, look at ambient, accent and task lighting to help create the right mood.
  5. Metals like stainless steel and chrome are very popular in contemporary design, because they provide a sleek finish and clean look. Stainless steel appliances and stylish metal tapware and door hardware are great choices.
